Ayam masak merah (chicken cooked in red chilli)

So, decided to cook something different today. My husband asked for this dish a couple of days ago, but I could not make it cause there werent going to be enough people at home to make cooking the dish worthwhile. There was also the fact that my mum, the lady with the recipe book, was not around. Since this is a dish I have made once or twice before, I needed her to be around to guide me.


Half a chicken, cut into 6. I used the thigh, wing and drumstick cause as I mentioned in a previous post, my family is fussy πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

7 dried chilli (cili kering)

1 and a half onion

3 cloves of garlic

Half an inch of ginger

2 stalks of lemongrass

3 table spoons of tomato ketchup

Water to blend the ingredients

Sugar and salt to taste

Tumeric powder (or freshly grounded turmeric)

Oil for cooking

How to

Marinade the chicken with salt and tumeric powder. Fry the chicken until three quarter cooked

Soak the dried chilli, wash and drain. Remove as many seeds as possible. Alternatively, you could boil it for arohnd 5 mins before draining the chilli and removing the seeds

Blend the dried chilli, onion, garlic, ginger and lemon grass with a little bit of water- just enough water to make blending easy

Remove most of the oil used to fry the chicken. Heat the oil and fry the blended items. Fry until golden or fragrant.

Add three tablespoons of tomato ketchup. Salt and sugar to taste.

Once mixture is boiling, add in the chicken and mix well. Leave until chicken is cooked.

Serve hot πŸ™‚

Sephora why did you do this to me

I recently purchased the Sephora Color Wonderland eyeshadow palette for my niece’s 14th birthday.

Received the palette promptly however turns out the content was totally ruined!!!!

I contacted Sephora Malaysia, and was in correspondence with Grace who was apologetic and promised a refund. However it has been 3 weeks and I have not received anything back from them.

I am so disappointed with Sephora.

Have you had a bad experience buying from Sephora online? What did you do?

Black Pepper crab

This recipe is definitely one of my family’s favourite! I don’t mind cooking it either, because it is dead easy, and really quick to make.


4 crabs (I use whatever they have at the market)

8 cloves of garlic – chopped

6 birds eye chilli

2 tablespoons of blackpepper

2 table spoons of pepper

2 tablespoons of oyster sauce

2 tablespoons of soy sauce

1 cup of water

Salt to taste (usually not really needed)

Oil to deep fry the crab

2 tablespoons of butter

How to

Clean the crab and split it into two

Fry the crab until around 2/3rd cooked. Usually takes 3mins each side at most

Once done, heat the butter and fry the garlic and birds eye chilli. Until fragrant Add the oyster sauce, black pepper, pepper, oyster sauce and soy sauce. Add water and let it boil. Add the cooked crab and mix well.

Serve when hot


Super easy recipe, only takes 30 mins or so from cracking the crab to serving

Curry Fried Chicken

This is a variation of the typical fried chicken but with curry powder


Chicken (however amount you want)

Curry powder (depends on how much chicken you are using, make sure it coats all of the chicken)

Salt to taste

Curry leaves (around 2 stalks or 20 leaves)

Oil to fry

How to

Clean the chicken

Mix curry powder and salt

Marinade the chicken with the mixture, and let it stand for half an hour or so. Add the curry leaves to the mixture

Heat the wok

Fry the chicken until cooked


This recipe is dead easy and tastes better than the normal “ayam goreng kunyit” or fried chicken with tumeric. Only down side is that my 2 year old son cant have it because it is sometimes too spicy for him 😦 Nonetheless, one of my favourite dishes to cook if it werent for the fact that it uses too much oil.

Chicken Curry

Today I will be sharing my mum’s chicken curry recipe. As you will soon find out, most of the recipes are similar, only difference is what spice mixture you add πŸ™‚


Chicken (depending on how many people you are serving. I normally cook with a quarter chicken – thigh, drumstick and chicken wing. I leave the breast for other dishes as my family is quite fussy in terms of chicken)

1 tablespoon of oil

2 cloves of garlic

1 large onion

1 inch ginger

2 star anise

Several coriander seeds

1 cinnamon stick

2 tablespoons of coconut milk

2 tablespoons of curry powder – I use Babas curry powder cause I like the taste

Salt to taste

How to

Slice the garlic, ginger and onion. You can cutΒ this up however you want to. Does not have to be perfect

Heat the oil in a pot then fry the garlic, ginger and onion until fragrant

Add the coriander, star anise, cinnamon and fry together

Mix the curry powder with water and make it into a paste. Make sure it is not too runny.

Add the curry powder paste into the pot and fry until fragrant and the paste turns more brown

Add the chicken into the pot, and mix them well. Add boiling water to the mixture, and leave to boil. Let it boil for several minutes. Add salt to taste

Once the chicken is almost cooked, add the coconut milk and let to boil.

Cook the curry until chicken is cooked.


As you can see, the recipe is pretty simple. You can add more or less onion/garlic/spices depending on how much chicken you are cooking. You can eat the curry with rice or “roti canai”. Yummy!!!

Cooking and on a tight budget

So, life has been sort of tough lately.

I am currently on maternity leave, and due to some sort of paperwork issue, although I took three months paid maternity leave and 2 months unpaid leave, I will be unpaid for 3 months and only getting paid for 2. To make matters worse, I wont be paid the first month I am back from my leave because they need to submit the form and that will take a while.

I have found a part time job for two months, but it does mean that there will be another 2 months where I will not have an income. Granted, I will get the money eventually, but it will be tight before it comes.

Therefore, I have started cooking at home more often. This should be the case anyways, cause no matter what you cook at home, it will still be healthier than buying from the shops.

So, I thought I will start sharing some basic recipes with the blog, partly so that it will give me an idea what to cook for dinner next πŸ™‚
